Abu Dhabi's Department of Community Development has unveiled a new policy focused on the protection of People of Determination.

This marks a significant step in the emirate’s ongoing commitment to ensuring equal rights and opportunities for individuals with disabilities.

This initiative aligns with the Abu Dhabi Strategy for People of Determination, launched in 2020 by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE.

The policy, developed in collaboration with the Family Care Authority and key stakeholders, aims to protect People of Determination from all forms of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and discrimination.

It establishes a unified and systematic approach to addressing cases of maltreatment and ensures that individuals have access to specialised services tailored to their needs. The initiative also emphasises early detection, prevention, and the importance of community awareness in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable groups.

Her Excellency Dr. Layla Abdulaziz Al Hyas, Executive Director of the Community Development Sector at DCD, highlighted that the policy was created with direct input from People of Determination and the associations representing them, ensuring their voices were heard throughout its development. "Our goal is to create a comprehensive protection system that meets their needs and addresses the challenges they face in society," she said.

The policy encourages a collective responsibility for the protection of People of Determination, involving families, workers, service providers, and community members. It stresses the importance of raising awareness about the rights of People of Determination, including the right to protection and the mechanisms for reporting cases of abuse.

One of the key features of the policy is its focus on removing barriers—whether behavioral, physical, or institutional—that hinder People of Determination’s full participation in society. The goal is to foster an environment where they can contribute equally to all aspects of life, free from discrimination or exclusion.

With the active support of government agencies, community members, and strategic partners, the initiative aims to build a society where all individuals, regardless of ability, can thrive and achieve their full potential.
