Reannie

The Hook up:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Reannie is a Filipino maid, living and working in the UAE. Like most people in her position, Reannie doesn’t earn too much and, by the time she’s sent money home to her family, she only has 100dhs per month to live on. Considering she’s working full-time, it’s an awful position to be in.

Reannie called the Hook-Up line simply asking for a second-hand laptop, something could use to contact her poorly Mum and family in the Philippines. Due to her financial constraints, she can’t even afford the phone cards to call home.

We were immediately contacted by LG, who were moved by the call. They came along to the Breakfast Show and presented Reannie with a brand new LG notepad, which should more than satisfy her needs for staying in touch with her family. Of course there’s nothing quite like hearing the voice of a loved one, so we also HOOKED-UP Reannie with a brand new Nokia handset to call home on.

Then came the amazing part…

The listeners and staff of Dubai 92 came forward in their droves. We had over fifty donations for Reannie. We played the calls back-to-back and let me tell you, there wasn’t a dry eye in the studio (in fact, by the sound of it, there were quite a few tears in cars and offices around the UAE). Considering Reannie only earns 9,000dhs per year, it was just tremendous to tell her that, due to the generosity of our audience, we rallied together over 15,000dhs in cash. I’m sure you’ll agree, that’s a life-changing moment right there for Reannie and it was an honour to be a part of it.

Tomorrow is our last HOOK-UP. Don’t miss it. Let’s see if we can do it again.

Debbie & Craig

The Call:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Debbie called the HOOK-UP line because she wants to shift the stone, kill the kilos, ditch the diameter and forget the flab! She’s had the babies and lived the Dubai life. How could we help?

Well, Corey from ORIGINAL FITNESS COMPANY offered a boot-camp for both Debbie and Craig to get them whipped into shape and all hot and sweaty for each other.

And once Debbie has worked up a lather, she’s off to Media City to see Thomas and Ludo at LPG for eight sessions of Lipomassage, Liposculpting and all manner of things.

Now concentrate because here’s the techy bit about LPG: “Lipomassage is the perfect accompaniment to the personal training/bootcamp that Original Fitness Co is offering as it is a slimming activation technique designed to eliminate stubborn fat that is resistant to physical exercise and dieting. Common goals using this technique are to slim down fat cells, to smooth cellulite, to firm the skin or to re-sculpt the figure.”

And to find out a little bit more about Original Fitness Co. we’re passing you over to them…

“At Original Fitness Co. we’re all about getting you into shape mentally as well as physically so you can get up, get out and take on the world.

We believe that Healthy individuals lead more exciting lifestyles and also that healthy employees are far more productive and efficient employees.

For this reason, we provide Health and Fitness programmes, Wellness concepts and strategies to individuals, communities, associations and businesses in the general Dubai and Abu Dhabi Communites, designed to facilitate positive lifestyle changes in individuals, a company’s work force and members of thriving communities.

So If you’re feeling out of shape and out of sorts and need a fresh look at life we’re the team to talk to.

No matter your age or fitness level we’ve got something for everyone, a spectrum of programmes built on years of experience and expertise, catering for every individual and their needs.”

Joe called the HOOK-UP line. Then called it again. And again. And again. And, well, you get the picture. He just wouldn’t relent until we called him back! What was it that he needed so badly? Well, he works with a girl called Daisy and both their contracts are about to end. He’s going back to America, she’s going back to the UK.

Joe realised his time was almost up. He had to make a move. Should he buy Daisy flowers? Should he take her to the cinema? Not Joe! He wanted to jump out of a plane with Daisy. DREAMDAYS.AE heard the call and said they could help, so Joe and Daisy will be flung out of a plane high above the Marina.

And when Joe and Daisy land, we’ve HOOKED THEM UP with dinner at SPICE EMPORIUM, FLAVOURS OF THAILAND at THE WESTIN.

We really love Joe and Daisy’s story and we hope at the very least they have some great memories to take away from Dubai. Marriage, Babies, etc. would also be preferable.

This was always going to be a hard one. Twelve year old Madison called the HOOK-UP line and told us she suffered from Type 1 diabetes. For the uninitiated, that’s not the good one. It’s the really, really bad one. We knew we wanted to do the HOOK-UP for Madison and her family but the insulin pump she needed came in just short of 30,000dhs with an upkeep of 700dhs per month. We didn’t want to risk putting it on-air and building the family’s hopes up only to dash them if we didn’t get any calls.

Well, we made the decision to go with it and thank goodness we did. First of all, THE LANDMARK GROUP came forward. Diabetes is a subject very close to their heart and they didn’t hesitate in offering the Perkin family 28,500dhs for the insulin pump. It was a massive gesture and there was barely a dry eye in the studio. A big thank you to THE LANDMARK GROUP for their help.

We then moved on to the small matter of the 700dhs per month upkeep of the pump. Listeners came forward in their droves, everyone at Dubai 92 chipped-in and we managed to round-up enough money to keep the Perkin family going for well over a year.

Now, that seems like plenty, right? But we go thinking… Madison is a little girl. Sure it’s great that we can keep her healthy and make her life a little easier but she should get some little girl stuff, too! So, our friends at TOYS R US at FESTIVAL CENTRE sent along a brand new Hannah Montana bike for Madison.

It was without a doubt one of the sweetest HOOK-UPS we’ve done. A huge thank you for everyone who helped, donated and got it together.

We love Sarah. Let me get that out of the way. What an absolutely great woman. Not just because she brought two boxes of Quality Street in for me n Geordiebird but also because she was a genuinely nice lady with a bit of a sad story. Four years ago Sarah was diagnosed with skin cancer. So far Sarah’s treatment is going really well and she’s fit as a fiddle. She called the HOOK-UP line for help with fake-tanning. She’s been having a bit of trouble with the application and keeps coming out looking like streaky bacon.

We put the call out there and Hayley from THE CURE at MEDIA CITY came forward to offer Sarah a year’s free spray-tanning and HOOK-UP regulars, Bobbi Brown also offered Sarah loads of goodies from their skincare range to keep Sarah safe and looking beautiful.

Alexandra is very pregnant, That doesn’t really matter to this Hook-Up but it’s always nice to know, right?! She’s from Germany and was told at school that she’d never amount to anything and would most definitely never go on to learn a foreign language. Well, she proved the teachers wrong and now speaks Italian, English, Latin and Scottish. Alexandra wanted to be HOOKED-UP with Arabic lessons and a better understanding of the local community and heritage.

Moaz from Eton Institute heard the call and came to the rescue. Eton Institute are offering Alexandra…

20 hours worth of private Arabic tuition (worth 4035dhs) and a personal invitation to attend the Eton Institute’s Cultural Awareness Program.

Diane called the Hook-Up line with a strange story. Anna and her fiancé, Mark, had been back to the Philippines at Christmas and planned to get married on New Years Day. They went to City Hall and were all ready to go, stood at the altar… And the Mayor didn’t turn up. He was still partying! Bad news for the couple, who had to fly back to Dubai the next day. So now they’ve rescheduled the wedding for this week but Diane wants to give them a reception to remember. What a lovely colleague, eh?

We put it out there to Dubai and Dubai responded.  Mario from The Metropolitan Hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road came on the phone and offered our lovely couple a decorated function room at The Sky Bar, as well as a 5000dhs bar tab, projection equipment for the wedding photos and a cake.

Best of luck to the happy couple for their big day and we hope they have a long a fruitful marriage.

Tim phoned the HOOK-UP line because he wanted to take his diminutive wife, Donna and teeny teen daughter, Jess to see Rod Stewart and Spandau Ballet at the Rugby Sevens ground on 7th May. However, the girls didn’t want to go because every time they go to a gig, their view is ruined by the “talls”! Step-in Dubai’s best concert promoters, AEG LIVE. They sent Jono (the man with the greatest hair on earth) along to the Dubai 92 studio to HOOK-UP Tim, Donna and Jess with a corporate hospitality suite at the Sevens ground with complimentary food and drink all evening and an uninterrupted view of all the on-stage action.

They’re going to have a great night down there, all thanks to the guys at AEG LIVE. Nice one!

Yesterday we had a chat with Richard, whose wife, Karen, is seven months pregnant. Richard quite simply wanted to give his wife a bit of pampering. Today the pair came into the studio and we gave them some lovely treats as a Hook-Up.

Sensasia Spa director, Alex Hurt Hooked-Up Karen with:

SensMama Spa package SensAsia Urban Spa would like to offer. It totals 3 hours of spa treatment, worth AED1110 and includes the following treatments:

  • Mommy Massage and More
  • Relax the maxed out mum-to-be and feel the benefits before, during and after giving birth to your baby. Start with the nurturing mother-to-be massage, followed by the perfect rose facial.
  • Scrub-A-Dub-Mum
  • Improve circulation and let us scrub off dead skin cells in those hard to reach areas – pure luxury
  • Buddah Belly Mask
  • Snacking 15 times a day? Soothe your growing belly and also feed it from the outside. Prevent stretch marks with this delicious moisturising mask made of avocado, honey and molasses.

Laurence from Urban Energy Fitness (who is already Hooking-Up other listeners) came in again and Hooked-Up Karen with…

  • Complimentary prenatal fitness classes until Karen delivers her baby. She will join a group of pregnant ladies who are all due in and around May / June.
  • Then, when she has had her 6 weeks check up (or 10 weeks in case of a C-section) and the doctor has OK’d getting back into an exercise routine, we will offer her 2 months of complimentary Urban Storkfit classes (post natal) which is a lovely fitness class that gets you back in shape gently and works on all the areas of the body that have suffered from the pregnancy and birth. She will be able to bring her baby along to Urban Storkfit.

Also, Samah from Destination Maternity has asked Karen to be special guest at the new store opening in Dubai Mall. Karen will be cutting the ribbon and will be doing a bit of spending courtesy of Destination Maternity, too.

Altogether now… AAAHHHH!

Well, what a fabulous morning! Lorraine called the Hook-Up line wanting to surprise her hubby, Keith, who she loves to bits. She was hooked-up with a romantic, sunrise hot-air ballon ride with makemydayme.com. A big thank you to Nadia for arranging that. We also got a call from a listener saying they could fetch back some Chinese OXO cubes from England when she goes home for a visit. Another Hook-Up sorted… And some great relationship advice from Lorraine and Keith on air. Make her a cup of tea every morning, say “Yes dear” a lot and you’re sorted.

Dave left a message on Thursday saying he needed Portuguese lessons because every time he goes back to visit his wife’s family in Portugal, he can’t understand anything they’re saying and can’t speak the lingo to talk back to them.

Straight away, Portuguese language specialist, Esther gave us a call and said she’d have a couple of months getting Dave up to speed and teaching him the essentials. Best of luck to him. In-laws are a pain at the best of times. This will hopefully make it easier!

We wanted to finish the week on a biggie – and it’s all about giving. Adam is running in the Marathon des Sablés in Morocco. This is not any old marathon. It is quite simply the most difficult race in the world. Six marathons in seven days, running through desert, totally self-sufficient. It seems impossible.

Adam stumped-up for all his equipment and is be raising money for Autism but first he needed to break even. We needed to HOOK-UP Adam with return flights to Paris and as much sponsorship as possible. We didn’t know what to expect. Times are tight. Could Dubai deliver?

Yes you did!

(Adam smiling because his feet are still in one piece, which they won’t be very shortly)

First of all, 92 listener Helen Barrett texted immediately and told us that she was planning a trip to Paris but heard the HOOK-UP call on the breakfast show and thought to herself “I should do more”. This morning Helen cancelled her Paris trip and donated 5000dhs to Adam. Think about that… Cancelling your holiday. Not many would. Helen is nothing short of fabulous!

(Adam and Helen… “We’ll always have Paris”)

Of course, this being the Hook-Up, it didn’t end there. Step-in our friends from NIVEA. Again, they were on the line minutes after the original call aired and blew us away with their generosity. Look at this…

First of all NIVEA will make a cash donation of US$6,000, which will get Adam to his target amount, meaning he’s well on the way to raising lots of dosh. He’ll also receive a NIVEA Survival Kit comprising:

Our new NIVEA Sun Invisible Protection Sun Lotion to avoid the sunburn

Labello Lip Balm to protect the lips

Hansaplast Foot Range to keep his feet soft and supple and protect from blisters

To avoid being stinky NIVEA Deo

NIVEA Creme for any dry or chapped skin

If that’s not enough, after each marathon, Adam can spruce up with NIVEA For Men Shower Gel and NIVEA For Men Shampoo to refresh and revitalise. Once he’s completed this magnificent challenge a day of pampering at the NIVEA HAUS Spa Dubai Mall : comprising:

Sports Massage with Juliana

Reflexology

The NIVEA Ultimate Shave and facial

Hair Cut

Manicure and pedicure

(and this is when the tears started. We were all bawling)

(Adam with “Jan’ll Fix It!” from NIVEA)

And finally there was Adam’s original request. Flights. He needs to get there and NIVEA’s Managing Director Robert Taylor-Hughes and his wife Jennifer will donate his return airfare to Paris. What a tremendous offer. A big hats-off to the guys at NIVEA and Sarah for this one. It was a lovely morning and a great thing to feel a part of.

Julie called the HOOK-UP line and asked if we could help her get in shape. She didn’t want a gym membership because, in her words, gyms aren’t for fat people. We got Julie into the studio with her daughter, Mariah and, in fact, the whole family. I’ve got to say I was expecting a real heifer but she’s nothing of the sort. Looked fine to us! All the same, when someone needs a HOOK-UP, we’re the guys to do it.

Thanks to LIVELY, Julie and Mariah will have a healthy eating plan for one month. The food will be delivered to the door and will be tailor-made to the girls’ tastes. Also the girls will be given memberships to GOOD HABITS, where like-minded Mums and Daughters support each other with losing the weight and keeping it off. Think that’s enough? Well, there’s more. Laurence from URBAN ENERGY FITNESS came into the studio to see Julie and Mariah and promised them two months classes and a personal trainer for ten sessions.

It’s a great start for the girls and they seemed very happy and extremely motivated. I think they’re going to do it. It won’t be easy but they’ve got amazing backing and we’ll be monitoring Mum’s progress via Mariah.

We were down to the wire this morning. Sarah Kettle called the HOOK-UP line wanting nothing more than a night out with the girls. She’s had the babies and is worrying that her dancing ship has sailed. We got Sarah in the Dubai 92 studio this morning and gave her one or two surprises. First of all, Sarah and eight friends will be heading to Bobbi Brown at Marina Mall on Friday for a bit of a pampering and makeover session, then they’ll all jump in the Dubai 92 limousine, where they’ll be whisked over to Warehouse, Le Meridien for a bit of pre-club “warming-up”! Once the girls are suitably, erm, relaxed, it’s over to Alpha for the VIP treatment all night and plenty of dancing.

Of course, we’d like some record of what’s going on, so we called our bezzie mate, gorgeous Ahlan editor Katie Heskett, who came into the studio to tell Sarah she’ll be shadowed the whole night by Ahlan! photographers and Katie herself will be on hand with notepad and dictaphone to keep an eye on what’s happening… And the following week on Thursday morning everyone will be able to pick up Ahlan! and see Katie, the Dubai 92 girls, Sarah and all her friends being showbiz in the glossies.

Here are the pics of Sarah Kettle’s night out with the girls, courtesy of Ahlan!

What a fantastic HOOK-UP! Every day they seem to be getting more exciting. Remember, still time to call and get HOOKED-UP. Today we need your help to HOOK-UP Julie. She’s done that Dubai thing of piling on a bit of weight and really wants to get it shifted. She hates the thought of the gym, so we really need something fun and healthy for her to do and maybe a good nutritionist or diet or food plan. Julie also wants tog et her daughter involved, too. It would be great if they could work together. A bit of a bonding experience for them.

Over to you again Dubai… Can you help the HOOK-UP?

This morning we had Mum, Lynne and her son Edward in the Dubai 92 studio. Lynne had called the HOOK-UP line and asked for a space-themed birthday cake for Edward. He’s a bit of a space-nut and wants to be an astronaut when he grows up. Last year, due to a family illness, Lynne had to cancel a space birthday party for Edward.

We put it out there to Dubai. Could you HOOK-UP Edward? Well, Sugar Daddies said yes. They have designed a unique, three-tier cake for Edward with planets, rockets, shooting stars and even aliens. So, that was the end of Edward’s HOOK-UP… Or was it?

We took a call from Rory McRae from party organisers, Little Penguin (part of Indigo Entertainment). Rory heard about Edward not getting his spaced-out birthday and decided to do something about it. Thanks to Rory and his team, Edward will get astronauts, space face painting, bubble machines and much more. It’s going to be a great day for him.

Sunday 21 March 2010

Hello everybody. Sorry it’s taken me a while to get round to the blog. Been busy Hooking-Up! I’m going to try to update this post every day and hopefully give you some behind the scenes juice and a few secrets. We’ve been planning The Hook-Up on Dubai 92 for quite a while now and, if I’m honest, I was very nervous about whether it would work or not. These are tough times and getting people to come forward and help those in need could’ve been really difficult. The boss had absolute faith though. A point he likes to reiterate pretty much every time we meet. Give him his dues though, he was right.

The reason he was right is because people are generally good and decent and most of us like nothing more than making someone else happy. For me it’s like Christmas every day. I much prefer giving presents than receiving them (don’t get GB started on this or she’ll never shut up).

So for the last couple of weeks we’ve been giving out the number to call for the Hook-Up line… 04 391 20 19 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              04 391 20 19      end_of_the_skype_highlighting – And you’ve been calling it in droves. And why not? Everybody should. For the cost of a local call to our voicemail, we could make your biggest wishes come true, or help out a friend, or help you find your car keys, or whatever!

Listening back on the calls is an interesting experience. I don’t mind admitting that with one or two there hasn’t been a dry eye left in the studio. Others have made us laugh, whilst one or two have made us recoil in horror. We’ve sorted out two HOOK-UPS so far. Here’s what happened…

Carrie Duckworth

Carrie is thirteen years old and is in Dubai with her Mum, Verna. To be honest, she isn’t having the greatest time out here and may soon be moving back to maple syrup country. So before she goes, Carrie’s Mum called the HOOK-UP line and ask if there was anything we could do to send her off with some happy memories. This was an easy one for us because Carrie is a big fan of the show, so last week we arranged a surprise visit to the Dubai 92 studios for Carrie and Verna. Once in the on-air studio, we got Carrie on the radio and told her the surprises didn’t end there.

Thanks to our friends at Atlantis, The Palm, we got to plan a pretty perfect Dubai day. On Saturday we met Carrie, Verna and yet more Canadians at Atlantis, where we spent a few hours looking around The Lost Chambers, before sitting down to eat in Ronda Locatelli (our favourite Italian restaurant in the world). Midway through the meal we were given a huge surprise that not even Geordiebird and I knew about. Giorgio Locatelli, one of the world’s greatest Italian chefs, came to sit with us for a chat. He even brought along his book which he signed for Carrie (We were soooo jealous).

After a fabulous meal, we left Ronda Locatelli and took the girls over to Dolphin Bay, where they got to interact with our rubbery friends, before spending the rest of the day in Aquaventure, where I have it on good authority that they all went off The Leap of Faith.

Lynne & Edward Wilmoth

This morning we played out a call from Lynne about her five year ols son, Edward. Last year Edward’s space-themed party was cancelled due to a family illness back hom in Britain, so these year Lynne wanted to go all out. All she asked of from Dubai 92 was for a space-themed cake. So far it’s still out there. We’re still looking for someone to HOOK-UP Lynne and Edward. Can you help? If so, get in touch.

Anyone who had the radio on between Thursday and now can’t have missed “the teeth-pulling guy”. Some of you said aahhh! Some of you said eeewww!!! David called the HOOK-UP line and told his sorry tale of losing his teeth via a rather unconventional method. He felt awkward being photographed and asked to be hooked-up with a smile. Step forward Doctor Amer from The Dental Spa, who surprised David in the studio live on-air this morning and promised his a gleaming set of gnashers and one or two surprises. We can’t wwait to see the ‘after’ shot. David will literally be grinning from ear to ear.

    LOOKING FOR A JOB!

Hi my name is Samantha I’m 20 years old. I’ve been in Dubai since May and haven’t managed to find a job.
I am finding it really hard and struggling to find one. I’ve worked for topshop in the UK for a couple years and since then I’ve been looking for something that can help me develop a career.

I am really good with fashion and wouldn’t mind something to do with fashion, even in publishing or advertising. I have heaps of experience in fashion and some experience in an office environment having had a few temp assignments since arriving here.

I hope someone out there can give me a chance. Please Dubai 92, I would appreciate it very much if you could help me…..I am desperate, I’ve been on my dad’s visa up to now and that runs out beginning of May as he is leaving Dubai. so I would have to return to UK and be defeated!

    Please help!!!! Thank you!

I’m South African and have been in Dubai for 2 years now.
My boyfriend is leaving Dubai to go back to the States at the end of April and has bought me “Charlie” a beautiful puppy so I wont get lonley when he leaves.
Charlie is 6 months old now and has spent the first 6 months of his life in a glass box in the pet store.
I need to send him for social skills training which will cost me 300 AED per day for 15 days… 4,500 AED.
PLEASE HELP ME GET HOOKED UP!

    Hi CB/GB,

I know Adam du Plooy will do a wonderful thing for Autism and good luck to him.

However, as April is (DAC) Dubai Autism Center’s Awareness month; I think they deserve more from a local perspective. DAC provide similar care and interventions for children and young adults in Dubai who have Autism and I know from experience how expensive it is to provide these services.
My own 11 year old son has Autism and I feel so fortunate to have been in a position to ensure my son , Matt, gets the best possible care and educational interventions in the UK.
So for Dubai, myself and a group of around 25 people are organizing 2 charity events with all the proceeds going to DAC. The first event is a Gala Dinner at the Park Hyatt on April 29th and the second event is a “Walkathon” at Safa Park on May 1st (coinciding with the Safa Park Flea Market). We have secured some funding and sponsorships but we really need more sponsors and to get these events a lot more promoting and advertising. We need to get this out there and make the Walkathon a brilliant family day out and raise as much money as possible for DAC. Similarly, we need sponsors, contributors and guests for the Gala Dinner. If you could promote these events on radio and get sponsors on board for us, it would be brilliant.

Just wanted to see if you had any luck hooking up the girl with the new insulin pump. I imagine it will be hard to get one donated as they are so expensive… but what about trying to find 60 people who would donate 500 dirhams each to buy the pump? I would contribute 500 dirhams and would even be willing to top up if you’re still short.

Catboy and Geordiebird, I just want to say how wonderful it is listening to the Hook Up each day. With a lot of negative press out there, its so nice to see people going out of their way to do good deeds. I am a sucker for a happy ending, but one request please? Some warning when you are going to air a tearjkerker (like today with the wee girl with diabetes), you are ruining my make up on the drive to work!! Seriously though, well done to you guys and well done Dubai x

  11. Ora Barnard says:

Join us for a cupcake and coffee,
The Southernsun Hotels would like to invite you to the newly opened Boulevard Cafe. You have been so busy hooking people up that we thought we would do the same for you.It is nothing big just a breakfast or lunch, coffee and a cupcake.
    Hope to see you there

  12. Eileen says:

She has had a tough few years with the skin cancer but never erev lets it get her down, so excellent effort, and I know its much appreciated.

    Thanks

    LOOKING FOR A JOB! :)

Hi my name is Samantha I’m 20 years old. I’ve been in Dubai since May, and haven’t managed to find a job.

    Thanks Samantha

please help, dont want lots of blured photo’s to remember our hunnymoon.

    thanks

  18. Hi CB&GB
We would love to help the couple expecting their first baby!
Can’t help with the pampering as such, but we are about to have our second baby in the next few weeks and we know that feeling prepared helps to keep you relaxed as the big day approaches!
We have a company called Tini Tots and we would love to set them up with some reusable nappies! Peace of mind that they have some fantastic nappies to take care of their babies bum, helping the environment and also helps Mum with her “Nesting” … we all know new mummies love nesting (Just ask my hubby)
We would love to hear how we could help….. JB & Rachel.

A big thanks from Canada for making Carrie Duckworth so amazingly happy! I know her mom well, and have followed her adventures in Dubai with great interest. While Verna has been enjoying every moment, Carrie has been a touch less enthused–but what good memories you have made for her now!!
