Mini Concert Mondays at Midday, August 2nd, 2010

Welcome to Mini Concert Mondays at Midday.

Every Monday at Midday I’ll be playing you three live/acoustic tracks from various concerts or live gigs.
To kick it all off, I’ve picked a song from Nirvana’s legendary MTV Unplugged gig in New York.
It features an acoustic performance of Come As You Are, taped at Sony Music Studios in New York City on November 18, 1993.
MTV Unplugged in New York was the first Nirvana album released in the wake of the April 1994 suicide of their lead singer, Kurt Cobain.
The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and has become the group’s most successful posthumous release, selling five million copies in America by 1997.

Next up we have Chris Cornell:

An American rock musician best known as the lead vocalist for Soundgarden, the former lead vocalist for Audioslave and as the founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his former roommate, Andrew Wood.
He has released three solo studio albums to date and the song that I chose for you today is Doesn’t Remind Me, from an hour-long acoustic concert, performed on September 7, 2006 at O-Baren in Stockholm.
Though not officially released onto CD you can download it under the title “Chris Cornell: Unplugged in Sweden”.
During this concert he performed an amazing cover version of Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean.
There are no live video recordings of that concert but I found this one for you from the following year, once again, in Stockholm.

The final track for today is from Duffy.

Born, Aimée Ann Duffy, she is a Welsh singer-songwriter who became the first Welsh female in 25 years to achieve number-one on the UK Singles Chart.
Her 2008 debut album Rockferry topped the album charts too. In fact, it was the best-selling album in the United Kingdom in 2008, winning her 3 Grammy Awards and 3 Brit Awards the following year.

The song I picked for you is a live and somewhat acoustic version of her second single, Mercy.

The first time I ever heard of Duffy, was while watching the show Later with Jools Holland on November 23rd, 2007.

This is the performance I saw:

That’s it for your first Mini-Concert Mondays.
Tune in at the same time next week.

You should allow fans of the show to make up the playlist… :-)

Great idea with Mini Concert Mondays! That Nirvana gig is utterly timeless and was great to be reminded of. Chris Cornell gives me goosebumps and his rendition of ‘Doesn’t Remind me’ almost makes me forgive him for that rubbish he did with Timbaland recently. Duffy…can definately sing her heart out!
Great fun, look forward to the next one. Roll on Monday!
