CATBOY’S MEN’S FITNESS 10K CHALLENGE UPDATE

I’m angry. Really angry. Angry at myself for not getting out running much since getting back to New York, angry at the couple of listeners who’ve sent in SMSs asking for updates on the training (thus reminding me I’m a failure), angry at Men’s Fitness for publishing absolutely terrible photos of me last month, which almost made me burn down the supermarket I was standing in, and angry that time is racing by (excuse the pun) and race day is fast approaching.

I’ve been avoiding running for weeks, slipping into bad habits, missing the gym, ignoring calls from the personal trainer and generally enjoying myself. Today I start getting pestering emails from Men’s Fitness and people in the office about how it’s going and how I’ve gone quiet. It’s really got my back up. So what have I done? Well, I decided to go running tonight…

But not before ordering a pizza.

I know for a fact that I’ll probably not make it to the end of the street tonight. I don’t care. I’ve got to do it. I’m depressed and Christmas is coming. I really want to enjoy Christmas. I love Christmas. I want to eat myself to death, so I need to balance it out with some exercise. Not so much for the 10k Challenge, which quite frankly, I don’t give a toss about right now. More for just staying alive and not becoming an even bigger, fatter lump.

I’m going to run every day. Cue every armchair-fitness-guru telling me I should take breaks. Well I don’t want to. I like running every day. One break-day becomes two and before I know it, I’m flat-out on the sofa covered in remote controls and biscuit crumbs, staring at the garbage on television, without the energy to tie my own shoelaces.

I needed the pizza. I’m hungry, there’s nothing in the house, I’ve been to Spinneys every day for about a week and can’t face going again, especially hungry, so I picked-up the phone and called Round Table. Any second now the intercom will buzz and my piping-hot pizza will be here. Either that or my phone will ring, the moped-riding pillock will explain how he’s on street 45b in The Springs and I will cry for half an hour, then eat the cold pizza when it turns up.

I’m sorry this is a bit of a rant. I’ve been sitting here for a while and I needed an outlet. The Fitness Challenge blog is supposed to reflect everything, so now it does!

Gotta go. Pizza man is here.

I have signed in for the 10k thinking it is a fun run – not a competition. I am not in a great shape, never run – always do long walks- 5 to 6 k, but I was thinking “lets see if I can handle this one?!”. CB I believe many of the people, if not all, are in the 10 k run just for the idea of going out and doing something good for charity. Lets not spoil our mood with the regular training programmes and diets and stuff.
See you in Jan! Don’t get depressed, stay positive!

Much appreciated Richard. I still haven’t been running since writing the above post. Very depressing.

Well done CB, you can do it (the running not the pizza).
I was one of the anoying listeners who sent SMS, sorry !
Hope it’ll kick you back into running.

    If you want some inspiration.
I started mid Sept being very unfit and only able to make about 2K and being over 100kg :-(
My longest single run since is 15 K, I’m now averaging about 25K total a week with at least one 10K a week. Average speed is about 6:30 min per K in training and hoping to break the hour in the actual 10 K race. The weight is also coming down slowly and 94 Kg now :-)

You can do it ! go for it.

p.s. Biggest secret I’ve found is go SLOW, What I thought was okay was much to fast and burning out, once I slowed down millage rocketed up.

    Cheers,
    Richard B.

Run when you want and when you can! It’s not a punishment, it’s supposed to be fun. Tweet me when you need a kick you know where… And I’ll see you on January 22. Hopefully we’ll make it to the finish before nightfall and the Barasti traffick!!! :-) )
