Before we'd even got near any exercise I had to have photographs taken for Men's Fitness magazine. One of the fantastic perks of this job is everybody wanting photos all the time. This photoshoot was particularly grating because not only had I been up since 3am, I was also decked out in tiny Adidas shorts (that revealed a little too much but cheek) and a fitted Adidas shirt that shows off every one of my contours, nooks and crannies. I'm sure they'll be in the next Men's Fitness. I won't be waiting by the Spinneys magazine section with baited breath. We met with Dan, our personal trainer. We were weighed and I'm happy to report that I'd shed two kilos in the first week of training. Then Dan talking us through our programme, which I laughed at, then he promised to design an easier one. He showed us through a bunch of stretches for before and after running, designed not only to protect our limbs from injuries but also to ensure everyone at the track gets to watch a lardy Englishman re-enacting Monty Python's &quot;Ministry of Silly Walks&quot; scene there times a week. We also spent a bit of time on the treadmill and Dan told us we did very well. He is contractually obliged to do that. I didn't feel like I'd done particularly well. Actually I'm really embarrassed every time I have the &quot;how far are you running?&quot; chat with anyone. The following evening we ran on the Khawaneej track again and I pushed the initial burst to 1.2km, which is rubbish, I know, but an improvement on the last run by 200m. A small victory. After that I was running half a kilometre and walking 200m in intervals.&nbsp;At the 2km point I jolted my shoulder and every step after that felt like someone was stabbing a broom handle into my shoulder-blade. I had to walk the rest. Even that was painful. The pain didn't take long to abate and on Wednesday we did our first BodyPump class. We'd had an awful morning in the studio with technical difficulties and we'd had a few words, too, so by the time I was driving away from the studio and heading to Fitness First, I just wanted the class to beat me up. It did. I was the only man in the class and had already been warned by several of my Twitter friends that I should not be a hero. The key seems to be 'go easy on the weights'. Luckily the woman taking the class agreed. I'm not ashamed to say my bar was probably heavier than the weights on the end. I'm not ashamed to say every woman in the class lifted at least three times as much weight as me. I'm not ashamed to say that when it came to the press-up section I could barely manage one. Once you've been photographed in short-shorts with your ass hanging out for a magazine that is going to be freely available for everyone you know to see, not a lot embarrasses you any more. The class was really, really hard work. I couldn't wait for it to end. By the end I was exhausted. I could turn the steering wheel in the car driving home, I had great difficulty carrying my bag to the door and even turning the front door key hurt. I felt like an alien learning to use a body for the first time. Every normal day-to-day task had a new and uncomfortable sensation. The good news is I will be going back.&nbsp;That said, it is two days later now and I'm still in agony. Obviously that's a good sign and it's what I need. My big problem now is getting out and running again. I feel like I need six weeks recuperation coupled with psychological evaluation for PTSD before I can even lace-up the Adidas again. It's 84 days until the Dubai 92 Men's Fitness 10k Challenge. There's still plenty of time for you to get motivated and join in.
